The Italian Exhibition Calendar was established with a decision of the Conference of Presidents of the Italian Regions and Autonomous Provinces of 24 October 2002, following the constitutional reform that gave the Regions exclusive jurisdiction in fairground matter. The attention of foreign professional visitors testifies to the interest that the international market has always shown in the Italian trade show proposal, which is the main showcase of small and medium-sized enterprises.
The calendar is compiled by the Interregional Coordination for Fairs, on the recommendation of the individual Regional Assessors who assign the qualification of the events, taking the date of the event.
Following the decision of the Conference of the Regions of 29 July 2010 from the 2012 edition, the compilation is carried out by the Conference of The Regions in collaboration with the relevant Regional Assessors.

In the period 2000-2004, the real development potential of the Italian fair system was penalized by the lack of exhibition spaces to meet a demand characterized by long waiting lists to participate in Italian fairs.
Since 2005, the lack of exhibition spaces has been overcome as a result of the implementation of the expansion projects of the exhibition facilities planned in the early 2000s.
In the period 2009-2015, the financial and economic crisis negatively affected the trend of development of the fairs that was expected with the expansion of the accommodation capacity of the fairgrounds. The economic recovery recorded since 2015, however, has shown a tendency to contain exhibition spaces for exhibitors, as a result of new ways of exhibiting at the fair accompanied by the need to participate in multiple events, even abroad.
